Reading geta motifs

Interest in ukiyo-e, kabuki, and seasonal motifs lets us see geta as carriers of cultural imagery.

What to observe

Before asserting an origin, verify motif, source, maker statement, and rights. Resemblance is not the same as an authorised reference.

A kiri-geta observation image
Study wood, hanao, and structure from more than one angle.
A geta form image
Form, height, and shadow are also useful records.

Thinking as a collection

For a collector’s work, a motif name, inspiration, maker, date, and rights or source note turn decoration into documentation.

Before buying or displaying
