The art of hanao

Hanao are both functional thongs and a compact field where textile, colour, motif, and fitting meet.

What to observe

Observe material texture, motif direction, and dialogue with the wood. Confirm adjustment or replacement only from a product’s own guidance.

A kiri-geta observation image
Study wood, hanao, and structure from more than one angle.
A geta form image
Form, height, and shadow are also useful records.

Thinking as a collection

A work with a named textile source, maker, or motif carries a double story: wood and cloth.
